Counting the Sons of Levi for transporting the Mishkan

Last Parsha ended with the Kehas family from Levi being counted for work in the Mishkan. This Parsha begins with the Gershon family of Levi being counted from Age 30-50 for their service in the Mishkan which is to carry all the coverings, curtains, and screens.

Next the Merari family from Levi should be counted from Age 30-50 for their service in the Mishkam which is to carry the pillars and the sockets.

The Nesiim were appointed to help with counting.

· Kehas 2,750

· Gershon 2,630

· Merari 3,200

Total Leviim aged 30-50 was 8,580

Sent out of the camp

If someone is Tameh they need to be sent out of the camp. The three types of Tumah mentioned are one with Tzaraas (sent out of all 3 camps), one with a zav (Sent out of the Levi camp and the Mishkan where the shechina was), and one who is Tameh from a Mes- dead body (Sent out of the Mishkan where the shechina was).

Stealing and paying a chomesh back

Someone who sins against another man by stealing, he has to pay back a chomesh, an additional 1/5th to the person he stole from. This is only paid once he admits to doing the sin. he only pays the chomesh he owes once he confesses his sin. If a person steals from Ger and he dies and has nobody that the payment can be made to, then it goes to the Kohen.

Owner of Terumah and Kedoshim

The Teruma and Kedoshim must be given to the Kohen but the one who brings it can choose who to give it to. This Teruma is referring to Bikkurim (Rashi). One who brings it shall have much wealth come to him (Rashi)

The Sotah

Hashem warns about the Isha Sotah – the unfaithful woman. She is a woman that did not act modestly and was guilty of the issur of Yichud (which is being alone with another man that is not her husband). There were no witnesses to if she did an Aveira but there were 2 witnesses that she was alone with him and she had already been warned by her jealous husband not to be alone with this man. The husband then brings his wife that he suspects to the Kohen and brings a Karban of barley flour (animal food). The Kohen then takes Mayim Kedoshim – Holy water from the Kiyyur – in an earthen vessel and adds in some dust from the floor of the Mishkan. (The Kiyyur was made of mirrors used by the women in Mitzrayim to make themselves beautiful for their husbands. This lady instead is turning away from her husband for someone else).

The Kohen takes her and uncovers/unravels her hair to disgrace her and puts the Karban in her hand. He tries to get her to confess so she will not have to drink the bitter waters and die a shameful explosive death. He makes her swear to innocence or guilt. If she is guilty and drinks the bitter waters she will become a curse and her thigh will fall off and her stomach will swell up. She then says Amen Amen. The Kohen writes these words of the curse and erases it into the water and she must drink. If she is guilty she dies the shameful death. But if she is innocent then she is forgiven and is blessed with more children.

Becoming a Nazir

A man or woman can separate themselves to become a Nazir for Hashem. The Nazir must abstain from all wine products and grape products including raisins (dried grapes) during all the days of his Nezirus. During this time he may not cut his hair which becomes Kadosh and he lets it grow wild. He may not become Tameh from any dead person including his mother and father. If he accidentally comes in contact with a dead body it ends his Nezirus and he has to cut his hair and bring a Karban and starts the process over. When he finishes his Nezirus he again brings a Karban Chatas and shaves his hair which he burns in a fire and he may again drink wine.

The Bracha through the Kohanim

The Kohanim are commanded to pour bracha onto the people with the Pasuk of Yevarechech Hashem that we say by Birchas Kohanim.

The Offering of the Nesi’im

On the day that the Mishkan was erected, the Nesi’im brought their offering to the Mishkan. Each one brought the same gift yet the Pesukim list for each one separately repeating the gift over each time.

The Voice of Hashem through the Keruvim

When Moshe went to the Ohel Moed / Mishkan, the voice of Hashem spoke to him from between the Keruvim on the Aron.
