Parshas Bo

Parshas Bo continues with the last three of the Ten Makkos. Hashem tells Moshe “Bo”, "come" to Paraoh again as I have hardened his heart to show My signs and show your future generations what I did to Mitzrayim.

Arbeh – Moshe and Aharon warn Paraoh that if he does not let the people go, locusts will swarm the land. They will darken it, devour the crops left after Barad, and fill the houses of the Mitzrim.

Paraoh’s servants beg him to listen. He agrees to send only the men, leaving the women, children, and flocks behind. When Moshe insists everyone must go, Paraoh angrily drives Moshe and Aharon from the palace.

Moshe stretches out his hand, and Hashem brings a strong eastern wind that carries the locusts across the land. They consume all the greenery. Paraoh asks Moshe to end the plague, but once again Hashem hardens Paraoh’s heart, and he refuses to let the Jews go.

Choshech – Moshe stretches his hand toward the sky, and Hashem brings a thick darkness over the land. For three days, no one can see or move, except for the Jewish people who have light.

Paraoh sends for Moshe and agrees to let the Jews go serve Hashem, but demands that the flocks and cattle stay behind. Moshe refuses, saying that everything must go, and not even a horse’s hoof will remain. Paraoh angrily throws him out and warns him never to see his face again.

Hashem then tells Moshe that one final plague will come, and afterward the Jews will go free. Before that, He instructs the people to ask the Mitzriyim for gold and silver.

Makas Bechoros – Moshe warns that around midnight Hashem will strike the bechorim, the firstborn of the Mitzriyim and their animals. A great cry will rise throughout the land, but among the Jewish people no one will be harmed—not even a dog will sharpen its tongue against them.

The Mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh – Hashem instructs Moshe to set up Rosh Chodesh and shows him what the moon will look like in the beginning of the month.

Karban Pesach – Hashem commands the people to prepare the Korban Pesach. Each household must take a lamb on the tenth of the month, keep it until the fourteenth, and then slaughter it. Smaller households may join together with neighbors. The lamb must be watched for four days to ensure it has no blemish. Some of the blood is placed on the doorposts.

That night, the meat must be eaten roasted over fire, together with Matzah and Maror. It may only be eaten roasted, not raw and not cooked in water. Nothing may be left until morning, and anything remaining must be burned. It must be eaten dressed for travel, with shoes on, a stick in hand, and eaten quickly.

At that time, Hashem will pass through the land and strike every bechor, the firstborn of the Mitzriyim and their animals. He will pass over all the houses that have blood on their doorposts—hence the name Passover.

The Chag of Pesach - And it will become a holy day for you to celebrate. Seven days of eating Matzah and getting rid of Chametz from your midst starting on the 14th of the Month. The Matzah will need to be watched and the laws of Pesach must be kept.

Moshe tells the Zekainim – elders what Hashem commanded to do and all the people did what they were told.

At exactly midnight, there was sudden death of all the firstborns in every house in Mitzrayim and the people were screaming and yelling.

Paraoh in pajamas in the middle of the night ♩♪♫♬🎼—Paraoh and his servants wake to the screaming and have had enough. Paraoh runs to Moshe and says to get your people out immediately. Take everyone and the animals as you demanded, go serve Hashem, and bless me so that I will not die. The Mitzriyim also rush the Jewish people to leave.

The people grab their dough before it has risen, along with Matzah and Maror, tie up the leftovers, and carry them on their shoulders. As they were instructed earlier, they go to the Mitzriyim and ask for silver and gold, and they are given it. About 600,000 men, together with their families, travel to sacrifice to Hashem. The Eruv Rav (Rashi: a mixture of nations that converted) goes up with them, along with their animals. As they travel, the dough bakes on their shoulders into flat Matzahs.

The Parsha concludes with the halachos of eating the Korban Pesach and several mitzvos related to Yetzias Mitzrayim, including the mitzvah of Tefillin. The firstborn, both human and animal, are holy to Hashem and must be redeemed.
