Hashem tells Moshe to speak to the Jewish people and tell them to bring for Him a “Terumah” – offering or gift. They should contribute materials towards building the Mishkan for Hashem, a place for Him to dwell in amongst them. The offerings included gold, silver, copper, blue, purple, red – dyed wool, flax, goat skin, animal skin, wood, olive oil, spices and precious gems.
Hashem will then show them how to build the Mishkan and the Keilim in a way that can be taken apart and set up again and again.
The Aron is to be made of wood and covered on the inside and outside with gold with a golden crown around the rim. 2 rings on each side will be attached for poles to slip through in order to carry the Aron. Inside the Aron will be placed the “Eidus” – the Torah / Luchos. The cover to the Aron will be made of pure gold and on top of it will be 2 “Keruvim” figures hammered out of gold with wings that spread apart. The keruvim will have the face of young children and will be facing each other. And when Hashem speaks to Moshe it will be from the cover of the Aron between the Keruvim.
The Shulchan will be made of wood and covered in gold. On top of it will be a frame also wood covered in gold. And it will have gold rings on the sides for poles to go through to carry it.
The Keilim for the Shulchan – a bread box with a special shape of 2 sides creating walls, spoons, pipes to separate the bread loaves to prevent mold, and supports the loaves should all be made out of gold.
The special shaped bread called Lechem Hapanim will be on the Shulchan at all times.
The Menorah will be made carved out of one piece of gold from its base to the branches and flower goblets. Three branches coming out on each side of the middle stem – totaling in 7 lights. They will be decorated with “kaftor vaferach” – knobs (or buttons) and flowers. Rashi says that Moshe had a hard time understanding exactly what the Menorah should look like so Hashem showed him in a vision on top of the mountain.
The Coverings -The Pesukim explain how the layers of curtains should be made to cover the Mishkan with colorful threads weaved together and loops to connect them.
The Beams - Next the Pesukim describe how the “Kerashim” – beams of the Mishkan should be built and set up. Made out of wood that Yaakov brought to Mitzrayim and asked his sons to bring back with them when they leave. Then overlaid with gold. The beams connected together with silver ring shaped sockets that clicked together.
The Peroches – A dividing curtain will be made of multiple color threads weaved together by a master weaver with designs created in it. It is to be placed as a Mechitza – dividing wall – between the Kodesh and the Kodesh Kedashim.
The Aron will be placed in the Kodesh Kedashim. The Shulchan and Menorah will be placed on the other side of the Peroches in the Kodesh. The Shulchan on the North side and the Menorah on the south side.
A screen will be made to cover by the entrance of the Mishkan also a beautiful work of an embroiderer with multiple color threads and laid over beams.
The Mizbayach Hanechoshes will be made in the shape of a square out of wood and covered with copper. All the keilim that were involved with this Mizbayach were to be made out of copper. It will also be made with rings and poles to slip through them to carry it.
The Chatzer – Courtyard – was to be constructed around the Mishkan 100 amos by 50 amos with beautiful material hanging, wooden beams, silver hooks, and copper sockets.
All tools that were used to make the Mishkan and take it apart need to be made of copper. (Adapted partially from Chabad.org, and The Pesukim and Rashi)
