LECH LECHA

The Parsha begins with Hashem telling Avram:

“Go from your land, from your birthplace, from your father’s house to the land which I will show you.” He promises to make Avram into a great nation and tells him

“I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you”.

Avram listens and travels with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot and they reach Eretz Canaan. Avram builds a mizbeach and continues to spread the knowledge about Hashem.

A famine comes to the land of Canaan and Avram and Sarai go to Mitzrayim. According to meforshim, Avram tries to hide Sarai in a box because he is afraid that they will see how beautiful she is and will kill him and take her as a wife for Paraoh.

The officers find Sarai anyway and when they see that she is beautiful they take her to Paraoh. Avram tells her to tell them that he is her brother so they don’t kill him to marry her.

Paraoh gives Avram presents and wants to marry Sarai. Hashem brings a plague of boils on Paraoh and his household so he can’t marry her and Paraoh returns her to Avram when she reveals to him that really he is her husband and he sends them on the way with presents.

They return to Canaan. Lot is still with them but Avram decides to part ways with Lot to avoid a fight between them. Lot’s shepherds were not careful to muzzle their sheep on other people’s property and Avram and his shepherds do not want to have any possibility of gezel – stealing. Lot moves to Sedom where really bad and immoral people lived.

Hashem tells Avraham the land of Canaan will belong to him and his children will multiply to be many in number like the dust of the earth. There is a war that breaks out between 4 kings and 5 kings and the city of Sedom is captured. Lot is taken captive and someone informs Avraham. Avraham goes to save him and wins the kings. But Lot falls captive to four kings that conquered Sedom. Avraham goes to save Lot and wins over the 4 kings. He is blessed by Malki Tzedek the king of Shalem. The King of Sedom tells him to take the spoils of the war but Avraham promises that he will not take the wealth – nothing from a thread to a shoe strap will he take.

Hashem makes a Bris with Avram. He shows him the stars in the sky and tells him to count them. Just as he cannot count the stars, his children will be so many he cannot count them. He tells him about the future Galus of his children and that he will be given Eretz Yisrael as their homeland.

Avram and Sarai do not have children. Sarai tells Avram to marry her maidservant Hagar so that he can bear children. He marries her and Hagar becomes pregnant. She begins acting nasty to Sarai and then Sarai in return makes her work very hard and she flees from the house. A Malach convinces Hagar to return. She has a son name Yishmael when Avram is 86 years old.

At 99, Hashem changes Avram’s name to Avraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah and promises them that they will have a son named Yitzchok who will become a great nation. He says you will be fruitful and many nations and kings will come from you. Avraham falls on his face in joy that he will have a son at 100 and Sarah at age 90. Avraham is told to give himself and his descendants a bris milah as a sign between Hashem and Avraham. A bris for babies born at 8 days. And Avraham gives himself a bris at 99 and to Yishmael who is 13 and to everyone else that is part of the household. (Adapted partially from In a Nutshell by Chabad.org)
