In Sefer Devarim – also called Mishna Torah - Moshe Rabeinu recounts what happened in the Torah from the previous Sefarim for the generation that is about to enter the land of Eretz Yisrael and gives them many new Mitzvos as well. His Speech takes place for thirty six days straight - right before he passes away.

Devarim

Moshe begins his speech to the people with words of Tochacha – rebuke, to instill a fear of keeping the Mitzvos properly. His speech takes them through the 40 years in the Midbar and the places where they sinned against Hashem. As kavod for the Bnei Yisrael, he does not mention the names of many of the sins they did but he hints to them by mentioning the places where the sins took place. (Rashi)

They angered Hashem: (with explanations as per Rashi)

In the Midbar saying if only Hashem had killed us before.

In the plains of Moav with the sin of Baal Peor

By The Yam Suf with complaining about there not being enough graves in Mitzrayim

In Midbar Paran with the Meraglim

In Tofel and Lavan referring to complaining about the Man which was white

In Chatzeros – with Korach and also Lashon Hara with Miriam

In Di Zahav hinting to the Egel Hazahav

From Chorev to Kadesh Barneya which takes 11 days to travel but Hashem gave them kefitzas Haderech and it took only 3 days. Hashem tried to bring them quickly into the land of Canaan but they insisted instead on sending spies which caused them to delay for 40 years in the Midbar.

Moshe tells them in 70 languages after Sichon already given over to them

And then, in the 40th year, which is after Sichon and Og, the giants, were already killed from their powerful cities, Moshe is telling them over the Torah and laws in the land of Moav on Ever HaYarden. Rashi says he told it over to them in 70 languages.

Moshe appoints judges

Moshe tells them, that when they were at the foot of Har Sinai, Hashem told them to travel and wanted them to go into the land. Moshe said he cannot judge the people alone because they became so many like the stars. So, he appointed judges that were righteous men amongst them to help him and make sure they are judged properly. They were told to hear the disputes and not favor anyone and if it was too much for them then they should bring the case to Moshe.

The Spies

Moshe recounts that they traveled through the desert and when they saw Har HaEmori and were told they were going to go in and get the land, they were not confident and asked Moshe to send spies in. Moshe said OK and took leaders from each Shevet and sent them. They took fruit from the land and brought it back and said the land is good. The ones that said this were Yehoshua and Kalev.

But the people were not satisfied and rebelled against Hashem and spoke bad about the land complaining that Hashem took them out of Mitzrayim to bring them to the Emorim to destroy them.

The people spoke with fear about the land with Giants and fortified strong cities. Moshe tried to convince them not to be afraid and that Hashem who has done all the Nissim so far will continue to be with them but they did not believe Hashem, the One that led them with a cloud and with fire. Hashem was angry with their response and decreed that the generation would not go into the land except for Kalev and Yehoshua. Moshe says that Hashem was even angry with him.

They’re told to go to the Midbar but they now want to fight

Hashem told them to turn away and go a different direction but more people sinned and decided to go up and fight. But Hashem warned them not to and they didn’t listen and the Emori came and came down on them like bees.

They remain in the Midbar 40 years

They cried and Hashem did not listen to their voice. They stayed in Kadesh for many days (Rashi – 19 years).

Then they traveled through the Midbar by way of the Yam Suf and around Har Seir.

Can’t go through Esav’s land or Moav’s land or Ammon’s land

Next, they were told to pass Har Seir but were warned to be careful not to provoke them because it belongs to Esav and Hashem will not give them as much as a footstep into that land, only to purchase food or drink from them.

Next, they traveled by Moav but were warned not to provoke them either because the land was given to Lot’s descendants.

They cross Nachal Zered and then cross the boundary of Moav which is by Ammon. And they are again warned not to provoke Ammon for they will not get that land and it is given to the children of Lot. Then they crossed Nachal Arnon. They sent messages to the mighty Sichon to let them pass through but he did not allow because Hashem wanted them to win over him.

Sichon and Og are captured

Sichon came with his mighty people to fight but Hashem handed him into the Yidden’s hands.

Next, they went towards the mighty Og Melech HaBashan and Hashem gave him as well into their hands. They were able to destroy the mighty fortified cities. They got the land from Nachal Arnon to Har Chermon. The Pesukim mention here that the Tzidonim called Chermon “Serion” and the Emorim called it “Senir” (which means snow).

Og’s Iron Bed

It stops to mention how mighty Og was – the last of the remaining Refaim Giants, his bed was made of strong iron and was 9 Amos long.

Their land went to Reuven Gad and part of Menashe

All these lands were given to Reuven, Gad and part of Menashe. Yair the son of Menashe took a territory and it is called Chavos Yair. These shevatim settled their wives, children, and cattle there but were commanded to go fight with their brothers.

Hashem will help Yehoshua

Yehoshua is told not to fear when conquering the main part of the land because Hashem will do to the people there as He did to Sichon and Og.

THE PARSHA PARTY ANSWER LIST!

Double Dip, Double Taffy, Double Spray, Dubble Bubble – Sefer Devarim is Moshe Rabeinu telling over all that the Torah told us a 2nd time to the people of the generation going to conquer the land in order to give them mussar to keep the mitzvos properly

Candy Lips – Moshe Rabeinu speaks for 36 days recounting the journey in the Midbar. Also for the Lashon Hara by Miriam in the Midbar

Cry Baby – The people cried when they realized they had to be in the Midbar for 40 years and couldn’t go into Eretz Canaan

White marshmallows, White Candies, Coconut candies or desserts – One of the places they sinned is called Tofel VeLavan – the white place referring to when they complained about the white Man in the Midbar. Also the Emorim called Har Chermon Senir which means snow

Gold foil candies – One of the places they sinned is called Di Zahav where they did the Egel Hazahav

Fruit by the Foot – They traveled by foot through the Midbar for 40 years. They also were told they can not step foot into the land of Esav

3 N Go candy – They were told to go through the Midbar instead of the land of the Emorim (Eretz Canaan) – although it was meant to be an 11 day journey to go from Har Sinai (Chorev) to Kadesh Barneya, Hashem made it only take 3 days and yet they still complained and sent spies

Giant Sour Candy, Giant Spray Candy, Giant Shock Pops – The lands of the Giants were mentioned by Moav and Ammon as well as by the mighty Sichon and Og

Fruit candies – The Meraglim brought back fruit and Yehoshua and Kalev said how great the land was

Fruity Peak – Mountains are mentioned including Har Emori and Har Chermon

Honey candies or Graham Crackers– Some of the people didn’t listen to Hashem after the Meraglim and went up to fight the Emorim. The Emorim killed them like bees – but also died after like a bee dies after it stings. Honey is from bees

Snow Flakes snack bags – The Emorim called Chermon – Senir – which means snow

FruZips – The Chet of the Meraglim and Chet of Miriam both included Lashon Hara (Please note that it is not meant in any way shape or form with disrespect to the Tzadekes Miriam who was a tremendous person of stature that we can’t comprehend. The “Zip” here is merely a reminder that we should learn from both cases and zip our own mouths from speaking Lashon Hara)

Candy Cane – Moshe Rabeinu speaks to the people as his life is coming to an end

ZaZoom -Hashem made a nes and a trip of 11 days took only 3 days
