Parsha Overview (Feel free to skip straight to the Party below - simply click the arrow next to this text and the overview will disappear
Bereshis means in the Beginning. The Pesukim begin with our very foundation that Hashem created the world in six days.
Day 1 – Light and dark
Day 2 – Separating the upper heavens from the lower waters
Day 3 – The boundaries of the land and the water and brings forth the trees and grass from the earth
Day 4 – The sun moon and stars
Day 5 – Fish, birds, reptiles, and creepy crawlies
Day 6 – Animals and Humans beginning with Adam Harishon
On Day 7 Hashem stopped creating the world and made it a holy day – Shabbos.
Hashem creates Adam from the dust of the earth. He blows a nishmas chaim – a living soul – into his nostrils. He decided that man should not be alone and he puts Adam into a deep slumber and takes from his side and creates Chava to be his wife.
Hashem puts Adam and Chava into the beautiful Gan Eden and gives them one rule, not to eat from the Eitz Hadaas Tov v’Rah. The Nachash – snake- convinces Chava to eat from the fruit of the Eitz Hadaas and she gives to Adam to eat as well.
Hashem is not happy that they sinned and punishes man with death in the world and he will have to work the soil and struggle to get food. They are sent out of Gan Eden.
Chava has 2 sons, Kayin and Hevel. Kayin is jealous of Hevel and kills him and is punished to become a wanderer.
Chava has another son Shais. Shais has descendants. Noach is born 10 generations from Adam. He is the only tzaddik in his generation.
